Neotame (E961) The Not-So-New Kid on the Block

Artificial Sweetener Neotame

For many, getting their “sugar fix” without the “evil sugar monster” is to use artificial sweeteners. Their focus on “Zero Carbs” offers a guilt-free indulgence.

After all, artificial sweeteners are used in drinks and tons of foods, so how could there possibly be any issue with it?

Is it as simple as to pit one sweetener as “good” and the other as “bad”.

Let’s go on a stroll through the history of artificial sweeteners.

Saccharin was created in 1879! Whoa!

Chemist Constantin Fehlberg noticed a sweet taste on his hand after working on coal tar derivatives.

Saccharin is often combined to make other AS (artificial sweeteners) such as aspartame and neotame.

Saccharin is 200-700 times sweeter than sugar. Marketed as Sweet and Low, SweetN’Low, and Necta Sweet. It contains no calories.

During WW1 & WW2 sugar was rationed, and it wasn’t until 1947 that supplies returned to normal.

Aspartame (invented in 1965) is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. It contains 4 calories per gram.

Sucralose, discovered in 1976 is made from table sugar, but is not sugar. Confused?  Sucralose is 450-600 times sweeter than sugar.

Splenda, introduced in 1998 is made from sucralose. It contains 4 calories per gram, even though it is marketed as a “no-calorie” sweetener.

Neotame, developed in 2002 as an aspartame alternative (marketed by NutraSweet) is between 7000 13,000 times sweeter than sugar! It contains no calories.

Are we seeing a pattern here?

With the food industry’s invention of artificial sweetener in the food industry, and the increase of sweetness potency of do you ever wonder, why do we need a sweetener 13,000 times sweeter that sugar?

And why do we need an artificial sweetener anyway?

What is wrong with the stuff God made?

Oh, but I digress.

OK, now the bottom line.

You may have heard rumblings that aspartame is a carcinogenic….meaning it may cause cancer.

You may or may not have heard that all these artificial sweeteners can cause muscle breakdown, increase cancer risk, and linked to increased heart issues.

Neotame has shown to cause digestive inflammation issues such as IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) and dysbiosis (which is a disturbance of healthy gut microbiome. (Our microbiome is key to our health). It may increase lipids and cholesterol.

Research indicates that there is no evidence supporting that people who use artificial sweeteners lose weight. In fact, a Yale study found that AS increased sugar cravings!

Did you know that AS are added to medications?

And to make them more attractive, manufacturers are “fortifying” them with vitamins!

The FDA has declared AS to be “safe”.

I know I’m not the only one who wonders, “Why are AS necessary in light of this data?”

Are we that addicted to sugar?

Another topic for another blog.
