Spice it Up!

Are you stuck in a food rut, eating the same meals day after day?

Whether it's out of habit or simply for convenience (and let's not even mention the cleanup!), it’s easy to fall into the “same ol' same ol'” routine.

But with the new year here, I’ve got a challenge for you: Let’s spice things up!

Not only do herbs and spices elevate the flavor of your meals, but they also offer incredible health benefits.

While they've been used for centuries to enhance dishes, many spices also double as natural digestive aids.

For example, licorice, ginger, and mint can help soothe an upset stomach. (1)

Did you know that spices like oregano, fresh ginger, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon can actually improve your gut health?

By adding these to your daily meals, you can boost the diversity of your gut bacteria in as little as four weeks! This is important because a decrease in bacterial diversity is linked to numerous health issues. (2)

There’s more—spices and herbs can also help support healthy blood pressure levels. Ingredients like basil, thyme, cinnamon, and turmeric may reduce heart disease risk factors. (3)

Cumin, in particular, boasts anti-cancer and anti-diabetes properties, aids in weight management, and improves insulin sensitivity.

Here’s an interesting tidbit: black cumin seed is known in Ayurvedic medicine as the

“Seed of Blessing” and “The Cure for Everything but Death”!

Who wouldn't want that?

Herbs such as thyme, oregano, and holy basil have natural antibacterial properties, helping to target harmful bacteria and support a balanced microbiome.

And turmeric (specifically curcumin) is famous for its anti-inflammatory effects and its ability to improve gut health by enhancing microbiome diversity.

Plus, it's an effective antimicrobial, helping to fight off common colds and the flu. (3)

Spices and herbs are rich in polyphenols—phytonutrients with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties—that can lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

So, the next time you're wondering what to cook for dinner, why not “spice it up”? Adding a few new herbs and spices can both satisfy your taste buds and boost your health!
