How many idioms involving skin do you know?
Beauty is Only Skin Deep
Skin In The Game
Under Your Skin
Save Your Skin
How many actually involve the state of skin? Most have to do with a state of mind or attitude rather than the state of skin. Things like: comfortable, confident, irritated, annoyed, self-perseverance.
You get the picture.
Let’s talk about the state of your skin, which is a crucial indicator of your digestive health and gut microbiome.
Recently, I’ve noticed a rise in skin issues among people, ranging from new conditions to chronic ones. Most often the common thread linking them all is gut health.
Our bodies are under constant attack from various fronts: Environmental factors like pollution and toxins
Dietary issues such as food sensitivities
Exposure to insecticides like glyphosate,
Chronic infections
Stress, lack of sleep, and many individual concerns.
These assaults can overwhelm our immune system, which is primarily located in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
This chain reaction can lead to symptoms, including skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and acne.
Remember, your skin is your largest organ, playing essential roles in protecting your internal organs and regulating body temperature through sweating.
It also serves as a detoxification pathway to eliminate toxins. There is a clear connection between gut health and skin health.
As I've discussed in previous blogs, dysbiosis—an imbalance of bacteria in the gut—can lead to the release of various toxins into the bloodstream, triggering an inflammatory response.
Since skin conditions are multifactorial, addressing gut imbalances is a promising strategy for many dealing with these issues.
So, what can we do? Here are some steps to consider:
· Increase your intake of vegetables and fiber.
· Identify and eliminate potential food sensitivities (like gluten, dairy, nuts, and eggs).
· Incorporate fermented foods such as sauerkraut, pickles, and kimchi.
· Remove processed foods, particularly those high in sugar.
· Reduce alcohol consumption.
· Add probiotic supplements to your regimen.
· Consider following a low-inflammatory diet.
Remember, gut health is vital for overall well-being, not just skin health.
Dysbiosis can impact cognitive function, hormone balance, blood sugar levels, weight, sleep quality, stress levels, and more.
